August 14, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - It took them four tries, but the Edmonton Capitals were finally able to defeat the Chico Outlaws, battling their way to an 8-7 win on Friday night at TELUS Field.

The Outlaws won the first three games of the four-game set, but the Caps got some clutch hitting in the series finale to post the much-needed victory. Edmonton had a 7-4 lead going into the eighth inning, but the Outlaws tied it up 7-7 before the Caps got one back in the eighth and were able to hold on.

The eventual game-winning play happened in the bottom of the eighth, as second baseman Matt Rogelstad's sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a run-scoring base hit when the Outlaws made a throwing error and right fielder Tom Collaro scored. Short stop Enrique Cruz led the charge on offence for the Caps, going 4-for-5 with four singles, two RBI and two runs scored.

Though he only faced two batters in the eighth, reliever Yosandy Ibanez picked up the win to up his record to 3-1. Caps closer Chad Blackwell tossed a three-up-three-down ninth to earn his 14th save of the season.

With the much-needed victory, the Caps improved to 11-13 in the second half of the Golden Baseball League season, and the Outlaws dropped to 12-11. The Calgary Vipers (17-7) still lead the way in the North Division, but Edmonton closed the gap to 6.5 games behind with Friday's win.

The Outlaws are now on their way out of Edmonton while the Tucson Toros (11-15) are on their way in to start a four-game series. Games are scheduled for Saturday, Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Friday's game was an explosive evening, literally, as it was another Safeway Fireworks Friday, with fans treated to a dazzling fireworks display right after the game. And when the Tucson series begins on Saturday, it'll be another edition of EZ Rock Saturday Night Movies. This time around, the Caps will be showing a cartoon marathon from dusk 'til dawn.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
