Caps Add Former Major League Catcher
August 14, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals have added a catcher with a powerful bat and Major League experience, while trading away one of their top relief pitchers.
The Caps made a deal with the Chico Outlaws on Friday, sending reliever Yosandy Ibanez to the Outlaws in exchange for heavy-hitting catcher Mike Rose. It was a convenient exchange for the teams, who wrapped up their four-game series in Edmonton on Friday as well.
Rose joins the Caps against Tucson for a four-game series Saturday through Tuesday, while Ibanez heads to Victoria to play for the Outlaws against the Seals. Golden Baseball League rosters expand from 22 to 25 players at midnight on Sunday. As of Saturday, Edmonton had 24 players on their roster, 22 of which are active.
In Rose, the Caps get a 33-year-old catcher who has appeared in 27 Major League games in his career as a member of the Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodges and St. Louis Cardinals. The fifth-round MLB draft pick in 2005 has been a part of nine different big league organizations.
The Sacramento, Calif., native split the 2009 season with Chattanooga (AA) and Albuquerque (AAA) in the Dodgers system. Prior to joining the Caps, Rose played in 47 games with Chico this season, hitting .320 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.
In Ibanez, the Outlaws get a quality late-inning reliever who had a 3-1 record and a 2.74 ERA in 17 appearances so far this season. He's averaging more than one strikeout per inning, fanning 33 batters in 23 innings thus far.
Rose will make his debut for the Caps (11-13 in the GBL second half) on Saturday when they open a four-game series with the Tucson Toros (11-15) at TELUS Field. Game times are 7 p.m. on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
