Plantier Powers Mallards to 3-1 Win

Madison, Wis. - In a well-played all around game, the Madison Mallards (3-3) knocked off the division leading Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (4-2). The Mallards defense turned three double plays, including the game ender, and the Mallards pitching staff held the Dock Spiders to one run and six hits. The win puts the Mallards back to .500 at 3-3, and dropped the Dock Spiders to 4-2 on the season.

Starting pitchers Ryan Kutt (Illinois) and Jon Young for the Dock Spiders kept the game scoreless through five innings. Fond du Lac took a 1-0 lead in the sixth, but the Mallards equalized 1-1 in the bottom half of the stanza on a rocket single into the right field corner by NWL RBI leader Jayce McLean (North Dakota State University).

Turning Point

Tyler Plantier (Richmond) drove in the game winner in the bottom of the seventh with a double blasted off the left centerfield wall. The Mallards added an insurance run in the eighth on a double by Drew Ober (UNC Charlotte) and a sacrifice fly into the wind by Garrett Kueber (Austin Peay). Trace Norkus (North Florida) locked down the ninth inning for his second save of the young 2018 season.

Top Mallards

- Brian Martinez got the win, hurling 2 2/3 of scoreless relief

- Tyler Plaintier contributed three hits, including a single, a double, and the deciding double in the sixth inning

- Garrett Kueber was 2 for 3, and participated in two of the three Madison double plays

Next Up

The Mallards hit the road for two games against the Kalamazoo Growlers. They return to the Duck Pond Wednesday, June 6 to host the Wisconsin Woodchucks for a 6:05 pm start. Come early to participate in our Pokemon scavenger hunt. It is also Wisconsin Dells Night and Willy St. Co-op Night.
