Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - Members of the girls high school volleyball team from Crocus Plains High School will be recognized during Saturday's Western Hockey League game at Westman Communications Group Place between the Brandon Wheat Kings and visiting Edmonton Oil Kings.
The top ranked Plainsmen won their second straight provincial title and tied the Selkirk Royals for most championships this decade with four, by defeating Winnipeg's Vincent Massey Trojans in last week's 4A high school final at the University of Manitoba's Investors Group Athletic Centre.
This Saturday head coach Trista Wenger and the remaining members of the team, including tournament MVP Lisa Barclay will be honoured as December's recipient of the Wheat Kings' Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month award.
"It's amazing, especially because at the start of the season our team wasn't on the top," Barclay, a grade 12 student told David Larkins of the Brandon Sun last week. "And to really come back and prevail through the rest of the season feels awesome and incredible."
The Crocus Plains plaque presentation will be made before the start of the second period of Saturday night's game.
Crocus is the first recipient of the Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month recipient for 2009-10. This year marks the sixth season that western Manitoba hockey fans have been given the opportunity to visit the Wheat Kings' official web site and nominate coaches, volunteers, athletes and officials for this prestigious award.
Fans attending Saturday night's game are reminded to bring a donation of a new unwrapped toy or non perishable food item for the Westman Traditional Christmas Dinner.
Meanwhile Friday's game vs. Kelowna is the annual Shoppers Mall "Teddy Bear" Toss, in support of the Local Christmas Cheer Registry.
Tickets to both weekend games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
