Brandon Scores Overtime Win

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Saskatoon, Sask. -- It was Saskatoon product Brayden Schenn who stole the overtime spotlight Wednesday night, leading his Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-4 victory over the hometown Saskatoon Blades.
Schenn's goal at the 2:03 mark of overtime was the difference as the Wheat Kings ran their win streak to four games and in the process moved to within two points of the first place Blades in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.
Schenn's linemate Matt Calvert scored a natural hat trick for the Wheat Kings in the first period as Brandon jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead. Defenceman Mark Schneider rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who led 4-0 in the second period before giving up four straight goals, including three in the final frame.
"We did some things really well to build a lead but you could see it turning halfway through the second period," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "I just didn't think we were working hard enough. We were trying to do as little as we possibly could to win the game and that's not how you play the game."
After getting their first goal of the game late in the second period, Burke Gallimore and Charles Inglis scored for the Blades in the opening four minutes of the third and that spelled the end of the night for starting netminder Andrew Hayes, who finished the game with 17 saves on 20 shots.
Hayes' replacement Jacob DeSerres wound up with the win, stopping eight of 9 shots as the Wheat Kings improved their record to 21-11-0-2 on the season. As well, Brandon has now won eight of its last 9 games to pull to within three points of the Eastern Conference leading Calgary Hitmen.
Brandon now returns home for back to back games this weekend against Kelowna and Edmonton on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday night is the annual Shoppers Mall Teddy Bear Toss, in support of Christmas Cheer. Fans attending Saturday's game meanwhile are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy or food donation for the Westman Traditional Christmas Dinner.
Tickets to both games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, located in the Pioneer Lounge. Fans can also order by phone at 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
