Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

Fargo, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks recorded their second series sweep of the season and sixth straight win with a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Cracker-Cats Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,669. The RedHawks' pitching staff combined to strike out ten Edmonton batters while allowing only one run on nine hits.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, the game took a strange twist as Kory Wayment appeared to make the third out of the inning on a bunt groundout. With Edmonton exiting into the dugout, the players were brought back onto the field by the umpires as time was called before Wayment's bunt. Wayment stepped to the plate again and singled to right field. After Tydus Meadows drew a walk, Richard Austin knocked a three-run home run over the right field wall to put Fargo-Moorhead ahead 3-0. It was Austin's tenth homer of the season.

Edmonton sliced the RedHawks' lead to two with their only run of the contest in the top of the fourth. With the bases full and one out, Rob Recuenco singled through the right side of the infield to plate Terrence McClain. The Cracker-Cats weren't able to score again, however, as Fargo-Moorhead starter Gerrit Simpson worked out the jam.

The Cracker-Cats threatened in the fifth inning with runners on second and third with one out, but Simpson worked out of a jam once again. Simpson, who pitched five innings, gained his third win of the season for the RedHawks after giving up one run on seven hits.

Doug Young took over in relief of Simpson in the top of the sixth and worked three scoreless innings while striking out five Edmonton batters. Nate Cotton earned his 11th save of the season with a scoreless top of the ninth.

With the exception of Austin's home run, Edmonton starter Scott Richmond pitched masterfully with 10 strikeouts in eight innings of work.
