Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Gary, IN- Winning three out of four against the Gary Southshore RailCats (4-4, 34-22) on the road puts the momentum on the side of the Schaumburg Flyers (5-3, 25-31). In a thrilling come-from-behind extra-inning victory, the Flyers took their fourth win against Gary with a 3-2 win in 10 innings. The extra-inning win was the Flyers' third of the season and first coming on the road.

With the wind blowing in, it made for a small-ball kind of game. No runs were scored until the bottom of the 4th inning, when a couple of RailCats led off with infield singles. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Steve Haake drove one in on a groundout to first base, giving Gary a 1-0 lead. The RailCats added one more in the bottom of the 6th inning on a Haake sacrifice fly RBI to left field, to make it a 2-0 game.

The Flyers got going in the top of the 7th inning, thanks to a historic hit. Pat O'Sullivan, who earlier doubled in the 4th inning, got his 1,000th career hit with a leadoff single. Two batters later, Mike Rohde was issued a walk. Alex Derhak stepped up and hit a ground ball to Gary shortstop Eric Blakeley, starting in place of the everyday starter Jay Pecci, who overthrew to first base, allowing O'Sullivan to score. It cut Gary's lead in half at 2-1.

With both starters out of the ballgame, the Flyers attacked on Gary reliever Steve Edsall. Edsall gave up a leadoff single to Flyers second baseman Demetrius Heath. Following Heath, shortstop Sandy Almonte found the gap in left-center and drove in the game-tying run with his third triple of the season. The score remained a standstill, as the game headed to extra innings.

Consecutive one-out singles by Christian Snavely and O'Sullivan in the top of the 10th inning gave the Flyers a great chance to score. Following a Dario Delgado groundout, Billy Malone hit a slow chopper to the shortstop position. Over there, Blakeley booted the ball, allowing Snavely to score from third base for the go-ahead run. O'Sullivan got caught in a rundown for the third out, but the Flyers got what they needed.

Handing the ball to closer James Morrison, the Flyers picked up the victory. For Morrison, it was his 11th save of the season. The win went to Brandon Villafuerte (1-0), who pitched in his third consecutive game. He picked up the save in Wednesday's game. Suffering the loss was Gary's Tony Cogan, who went two innings allowing the unearned run to score in the top of the 10th inning.

The Flyers will head to Kansas City for a three-game weekend series against the Kansas City T-Bones. In the series opener, the Flyers will send right-hander Brandon Culp (0-2, 7.65 with the Flyers) to the mound against the T-Bones' righty Jonathan Krysa (0-5, 6.75). First pitch is set for 7:05pm.

The Flyers will return to Alexian Field on Tuesday, July 24th to take on the Gary Southshore RailCats. Tickets are available for this game and can be purchased at the Alexian Field box office or online at flyersbaseball.com
