Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals got a solid effort from Chris Lambert on Thursday night, picking up a 3-1 victory over the Tulsa Drillers at Hammons Field. With the victory, the Cards up their second-half mark to 27-32, but are still 5.5 games back of East Division-leading Arkansas.
Lambert (3-6) gave up just one unearned run, allowing just five hits over six innings of work. Lambert came within one of tying his season-high, fanning eight Tulsa Drillers on the night.
The Cards struck first, on Papo Bolivar's RBI double off Tulsa starter Zack Parker (10-10) in the third. With two outs, Shaun Boyd reached with a double, then scored on Bolivar's 22nd two-bagger of the year, making it 1-0.
Tulsa tied it with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. With one out, Cory Slavik doubled down the right field line, then advanced to third on an errant throw from right fielder Ty Parker. Joe Koshansky's sac fly to left field, brought home Slavik from third, tying the game at 1-1.
The Cardinals took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, as Brad Cresse picked up a two-run double to break the tie. Travis Hanson led off the frame with a single to left field, giving him a season-best 14-game hitting streak. Gabe Johnson would follow and try to bunt Hanson to second base. After getting the bunt down, Tulsa pitcher Zack Parker's throw to second pulled shortstop Doug Bernier off the bag, as both runners were safe. After a Ty Parker sac bunt, Cresse followed with his second hit of the night, a two-run double to right-center field, giving the Cards a 3-1 lead.
Andy Cavazos, Josh Kinney and Cory Doyne combined to throw three scoreless innings out of the Springfield bullpen. Luis Guance's two-out single to right field brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Doyne got Tony Miller to pop up to end the game, giving Doyne his team-leading 16th save of the year.
The Cardinals will wrap up their season-series with Tulsa on Friday night, with the final game of the four-game set. Stuart Pomeranz (4-6) will throw for Springfield, while Tulsa will go with Texas League All-Star Sandy Nin (9-5).
