Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - Houston Astros' first baseman Jeff Bagwell, on the mend from shoulder surgery, could begin a rehab assignment with the Hooks as early as next Tuesday. This according to published reports and Hooks' manager Dave Clark.

Bagwell is scheduled to take batting practice Friday against Brandon Backe when the right-hander has his bullpen session. Barring any setbacks, Bagwell will likely report to Corpus Christi for a portion of the final home stand of the season, which begins this Saturday night against Midland. Clark says that Bagwell could be in the line-up for next Tuesday's game against the RockHounds, the final game of the series with Midland.

According to an article written today by Alyson Footer on the MLB.com website, Bagwell expects to get in roughly a dozen at-bats as the designated hitter for the Hooks.

"Their season doesn't last very long, so I only have a certain amount of time," Bagwell said, referring to the Hooks' season ending on Sept. 4. "I'll maybe play three games, DH, then come back and pinch-hit. Twelve at-bats over the course of three days, that should be enough of a gauge right now."

Bagwell had played in 24 games for the Astros this season, and was batting .250 with three home runs and 15 RBI's when it was decided that the four-time All Star and 1994 National League MVP would go under the knife. Bagwell underwent shoulder surgery on June 7th.

The Hooks, currently on the road in Frisco, will battle first-place Midland in a four-game series that gets started this Saturday night at Whataburger Field. The home stand and the regular season will conclude with a five-game series against the San Antonio Missions that begins on Wednesday, August 31st. Corpus Christi enters play tonight (Thursday) three games out of first with 11 games left to play.
