Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The New York Mets have announced that RHP Jonah Tong has been promoted to High-A Brooklyn from Single-A St. Lucie.
A 2022 7th round pick by the Mets organization, Tong is off and running to begin 2024. Through four appearances with St. Lucie, the Markham, Ontario native did not allow an earned run through 18.2 innings of work.
The 19-year-old is set to become the youngest player on Brooklyn's roster. Tong surrendered just seven hits during his time in St. Lucie this season. The right hander walked just five batters, while striking out 37 - good for a 52.9% strikeout rate.
Tong most recently appeared for St. Lucie on April 25, when he tossed a season high six innings, giving up just two hits with no walks issued. He also punched nine batters. Tong has collected at least nine strikeouts in three of his four appearances to date this season - including a season-high 11 over just 4.1 innings in his season debut on April 7.
In 2023, Tong appeared in seven games with the FCL Mets, while making three appearances with Single-A St. Lucie. After growing up in Canada, Tong transferred to Georgia Premier Academy in Georgia for his senior season of high school in 2022. He also made four appearances with the Frederick Keys of the MLB Draft League in 2022 following his high school graduation.
Tong is set to join a Brooklyn pitching staff that has been stellar as of late. The Cyclones surrendered just two runs per game in their most recent series against the Blue Rocks.
Brooklyn welcomes Aberdeen to Maimonides Park for a six game set beginning Tuesday, April 30. For tickets and more information, please visit brooklyncyclones.com.
