Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Kinston, NC - Three hurlers combined to shut down Kinston as Winston-Salem defeated the Indians 2-1 in the series opener on Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium. Dash starter Anthony Carter (9-4) earned his league-leading 9th win as he limited Kinston to one run on three hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.
Winston-Salem received all the run support they needed in the first inning against Kinston starting pitcher Alexander Perez. Center fielder Justin Greene reached on a walk and stole second base. Jimmy Gallagher delivered a run-scoring single to put the Dash on the board. Winston-Salem added a run later in the inning when Salvador Sanchez contributed a bases-loaded ground out that allowed Gallagher to cross the plate to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.
Kinston cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first inning when Lonnie Chisenhall lined an RBI single that scored Lucas Montero. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
Dash reliever Nate Jones took over for Carter and tossed two scoreless innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts. Santo Luis worked a perfect ninth inning to collect his seventh save of the season.
Perez, who will turn 20 years old on Friday, settled down after the first inning, but suffered the tough-luck loss for Kinston. He tossed six innings and held Winston-Salem to two runs on six hits and fell to 1-1 after three Carolina League starts.
The middle match of this three-game series is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium. Winston-Salem will send LHP Justin Edwards (2-1, 5.81) to the mound, while Kinston will counter with RHP Paulo Espino (2-5, 3.50).
Winston-Salem returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday, July 24 when they open a six-game home stand with the first of three against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Dash will host a fireworks extravaganza following Friday night's game and all tickets for Saturday's contest against the Pelicans are only $5 in advance and include a FREE Dash hat. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Single-game tickets can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
