Kinston Indians News Release
Tribe Talk....
Dropping E-A season-high tying four K-Tribe errors led to three unearned runs early for Potomac as the Nats finished off a three-game sweep of Kinston 9-6 on Sunday. K-Tribe starter Eric Berger (7-7) suffered a tough-luck loss pitching four and 2/3 innings, allowing five runs but just two earned, on four hits, four walks and six strikeouts. With the score 9-1 Nats in the top of the eighth inning, Kinston tried to mount a comeback. P-Nats reliever Cole Kimball walked four of the five batters he faced to start the frame, as Roman Pena got an RBI walk with the bases loaded to score Lucas Montero. Kimball was lifted for Dan Leatherman who surrendered a bases-clearing 3-RBI double for Ronald Rivas to cut the lead to 9-5. Doug Pickens then singled home Rivas to cut the lead to three, but Leatherman would shut the door after that, striking out Ryan Blair and Eric Perlozzo to end the inning. Kinston would go one-two-three in the ninth and lose 9-6.
O Offense Where Art Thou?---Kinston managed just 14 hits this weekend in Potomac, its least amount of hits in a three-game set all season. The Indians season low for hits in a three-game series prior to this weekend was 16 back on June 25-27th against Salem to open up the second half of the season. The 14-hit weekend comes on the heels of a 14-hit, nine run outburst on Thursday vs. Frederick. Kinston is now hitting just .219 over its last 10 games, and .198 its last five games. Kinston has hit a recent power surge though, blasting 11 homers in its last 10 games.
Vs. The Dash-The K-Tribe is 5-9 against Winston-Salem this season, but 4-3 at home. Errors have plagued the Indians against their Southern Division rival, committing 19 errors in 14 games, which has led to 15 unearned runs. Kinston has a better team batting average (.264) against the Dash and a better team ERA (3.71) in the season series. Winston-Salem is hitting just .246 with a 4.05 ERA against Kinston. The last time the Indians played the Dash was June 5th-7th at Winston Salem, in which the K-Tribe got swept in a four-game series for the first time since July 28-31, 2005 in Wilmington. The last time Winston-Salem came to Grainger Stadium was way back during the first home stand of the season, May 17th-19th when Kinston took two of three games.
Alexander The Great-Kinston's starter tonight Alexander Perez looks to make it a third consecutive outstanding outing to begin his K-Tribe career. Perez-who turns just 20-years old on Friday-has allowed just one run and 11 hits in his first two starts combined (13 IP), while striking out 11 and walking just two. He will make his second start at home tonight, his first since starting his Carolina League career with a six-inning shutout of the Potomac Nationals on July 10th.
Mull It Over-Former East Carolina Pirate and current Winston-Salem Dash second baseman Dale Mollenhauer is having a stellar season so far in his third professional season. The former Pirate is 8th in the Carolina League in hitting with a .294 batting average through 81 games. He also has 90 hits, fifth most in the CL, and is tied for 5th in the league with 54 runs scored. The Carolina-League All-Star has also shown a great glove, and is second among everyday second baseman in the CL with a .986 fielding percentage (trailing Kinston's Cord Phelps who has a .992 fielding percentage).
