Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Potomac scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to erase a 3-2 deficit en route to earning a 5-4 victory over Lynchburg at City Stadium Tuesday night. The Hillcats and P-Nats will meet in game two of the three-game set on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
After both starting pitchers - Potomac's Adam Carr and Lynchburg's Matt McSwain - worked two perfect frames to start the game, the P-Nats drew first blood with a run in the top of the third. Michael Martinez singled to start the inning and Stephen King followed with an RBI double that gave Potomac a 1-0 advantage.
Lynchburg answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Erik Huber hit a leadoff double off Carr and advanced to third on Eric Fryer's fly out to right field. Huber scored on an RBI groundout from Angel Gonzalez to tie the game at 1-1. Jose De Los Santos followed with an infield single and promptly stole second base. Alex Presley laced an RBI double that plated De Los Santos and Jordy Mercer followed with an RBI triple, which put the Cats in front 3-1.
The P-Nats drew closer with a run in the top of the fourth. With one out, McSwain issued consecutive walks to Michael Burgess and Chris Marrero. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Francisco Plasencia knocked in Burgess with an RBI single to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
One inning later, Potomac seized the lead and the momentum by striking for three runs. After McSwain retired the first two batters in the frame, Dan Nelson socked a triple into the right-center field gap. Danny Espinosa followed with an RBI double and Espinosa scored moments later when Jesus Valdez delivered an RBI single. Burgess drove in Valdez with an RBI double to complete the scoring. The P-Nats notched three runs and four hits, including three extra-base hits, with two outs in the frame to take a 5-3 lead.
The Cats cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Fryer roped a one-out double off Potomac reliever Jesse Estrada and advanced to third when Gonzalez grounded out. De Los Santos knocked in Fryer with an RBI single to make it a 5-4 contest.
But Potomac handed the ball to Drew Storen in the bottom of the eighth and the 2009 first-round draft pick shined in his Advanced-A debut. Storen struck out the side in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the Potomac victory and earn his first save.
Carr (1-1) picked up the win for Potomac and McSwain (8-5) took the loss for Lynchburg.
The Hillcats will attempt to even the three-game series on Wednesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
