Pitchers' duel won by Spirit

Little Falls, NJ – A pitchers' duel went to the North Shore Spirit, as they defeated the New Jersey Jackals 3-2.

Starting pitchers John Kelly, of the Spirit, and Aaron Myers, of the Jackals, pitched four scoreless innings to start the ballgame.

The Spirit would finally put a couple on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Back to back triples by Mike Granger and Yuri Sanchez put one on the board. Lucas Taylor then singled, scoring Sanchez, giving the Spirit a 2-0 lead.

New Jersey would cut the lead in half, in the top of the sixth. An RBI single by Wady Almonte gave the Jackals their first run of the ballgame.

They would tie the game in the top of the seventh. An RBI double by John Anderson pushed across Scott Goodman.

North Shore would regain the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With Sanchez on third, Taylor reached on an error by Jackals' second baseman Craig Conway, allowing the leading run to score.

Aaron Myers pitched seven superb innings for the Jackals. He scattered eight hits, while giving up three runs, only two earned, while suffering the loss.

Spirit starting pitcher John Kelly pitched a complete game, while being awarded the victory. The complete game was his third of 2004 against the New Jersey Jackals. Kelly scattered seven hits, giving up two earned runs, while striking out five.

For the Jackals, Wilton Veras was 2-4.

Shortstop Yuri Sanchez was 2-3 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored, for the Spirit.

The Jackals continue their series with the North Shore Spirit on Saturday, July 31, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. All games can be heard on WPSC 88.7fm, and on the web at www.jackals.com. Broadcasts begin ten minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch, with the Jackals Pre-Game Show.

The team returns home on Thursday, August 5, 2004, when the New Haven County Cutters come to town for a three-game set. It's a Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark.
