Former Third Rounder Signs with Jacks
July 30, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Bangor Lumberjacks News Release
Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks have agreed to terms with INF Jeff Brooks on a contract the Northeast League club announced today. Brooks is a former third round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1997. To make room for Brooks on the roster, the Lumberjacks released INF Carlos Dominguez.
After four years in the Diamondbacks organization, Brooks was a rule 5 selection of the Cardinals in 2001. His best season in the minors came in 1999 with the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League, when he hit .339 with 12 home runs and 60 RBI. He finished fifth in the league in RBI, fifth in home runs, third in the league in total bases (162), second in hits (100), fourth in games (73), fourth in extra base hits (34), fifth in doubles (18), and second in at-bats (295). The Osprey won the league championship that season.
Last season, Brooks split time between Kansas City and St. Paul of the Northern League batting .224 with six home runs and 28 RBI.
"He was blasting balls off the netting in left field yesterday. Jeff can swing it," said Lumberjacks manager Kash Beauchamp. "He'll had a much needed right handed stick to our lineup."
Brooks primary position is third base. The Mountain City, TN native is a career .249 hitter with 36 home runs and 286 RBI in seven professional seasons.
Dominguez was hitting .167 with an RBI in 24 at-bats for the Lumberjacks this season.
