
Jackals score 14 runs on Spirit

Little Falls, NJ â For the second time this season, the Jackals put 14 runs on the board against the North Shore Spirit, defeating them by a final score of 14-9.
New Jersey used a two-run homerun by Wilton Veras, in the bottom of the first, to take an early lead.
Their lead would jump to nine in the second, when the Jackals scored seven runs, on Spirit starter Aaron Dean, and reliever Miguel Marichal. Scott Goodman, Jay LaFlair, Kevin Grijak, Wilton Veras, and Wady Almonte all notched RBI's in an inning where the Jackals sent 12 hitters to the plate.
North Shore would score their first runs in the bottom of the third. RBI's by Vic Davilla and Joe Hastings, made it a 9-2 ballgame.
The Jackals would re-gain those runs, and more in the top of the fourth. New Jersey put three up on the board, including a two RBI triple by Scott Goodman.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Wady Almonte grounded into a double play, allowing Zack Smithlin to score. The run put the Jackals ahead 13-2.
An RBI triple by Juan Infante in the top of the seventh extended the New Jersey lead to 14-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Spirit came up with four runs with one swing of the bat. Joe Hastings hit the first grand slam of the 2004 season for the Spirit. Through seven innings, the Jackals led 14-6.
Mike Perkins would walk across a run in the bottom of the ninth. Yuri Sanchez would then single with the bases loaded, pushing across two, making it 14-9 in favor of the Jackals, and that's the way the ballgame ended.
Jackals starter Jackson Crowther pitched six solid innings. He was the winner, giving up two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out six.
Aaron Dean, of North Shore, lasted only an inning and a third. Dean gave up eight earned runs, on six hits, in a losing effort.
For the Jackals, Wilton Veras was 2-3 with a two-run homerun, and two runs scored.
Joe Hastings had five RBI for the Spirit.
The Jackals continue their series with the North Shore Spirit on Friday, July 30, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. All games can be heard on WPSC 88.7fm, and on the web at www.jackals.com.
