Pitcher Laffey, Infielder Cabrera Assigned to Akron on Rehab

June 23, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

The Aeros made two roster moves today, as Cleveland announced that both LHP Aaron Laffey and IF Asdrubal Cabrera have been assigned to Akron on Major League rehab assignments. Both will be in uniform and in the lineup tonight for the start of a three-game series against Trenton at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park.

Laffey, who is slated to work four innings/65 pitches tonight, made one appearance with Class AAA Columbus at the start of the year before being recalled to the Indians April 15th (his 24th birthday). He went 3-1 with a save and a 3.93 ERA in 10 appearances (four starts) for the Tribe before suffering a strained right oblique during a game in Cincinnati May 22nd. He made his first rehab start with Columbus last Thursday, going three innings and allowing a run on five hits to Rochester. He is expected to wear #39, although that is unfonfirmed.

Cabrera, who was Akron's Opening Day shortstop in 2007 and hit .310 with eight homers and 54 RBI in 96 games with the Aeros, was having a terrific campaign for Cleveland before hurting his left shoulder June 2nd at Minnesota. The 23-year-old Venezuelan was hitting .316 with two homers and 27 RBI through 53 games for the Indians, while also stealing seven bases and notching a .374 on-base percentage. I do not yet have a jersey number for him.
