Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Traverse City, MI - The Pit Spitters advertised fireworks after the game on July 4. It didn't take until the final out for the Traverse City sky to be lit up, as the Pit Spitters mashed three home runs in a walk off, 5-4 win, over the Lakeshore Chinooks in 11 innings.
The power binge started in the third inning as Andrew Morrow (JR Michigan State) took a Grant Hartwig fastball deep to left field for a two-run shot. Jake Wilson (JR Bowling Green) made it back to back, following up with a blast of his own to right, taking the lead to 3-1. The designated hitter Kam Smith (SO Northern Illinois) chipped in a solo shot of his own in the fourth inning, running the home lead to 4-1.
The lead would remain 4-1 until the Chinooks pulled level in the seventh, eventually taking the game to extra innings by that same score. Kevin Hahn (SR Cal State- Stanislaus) threw scoreless frames in both the tenth and the eleventh, overcoming league rules that place a runner at second to start all extra inning frames. The deadlock was eventually broken on an RBI walk-off single through a drawn-in infield by third basemen Christian Faust (SO Grand Valley.)
Kevin Hahn earned the victory, moving his record to 2-0 on the year. Chad Patrick (SO Purdue Northwest) posted another impressive outing on the mound, as he went the first six and one third innings, allowing four runs, while striking out seven.
The Pit Spitters return to action Friday, with a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Battle Creek Bombers. Every Friday is "Fireworks Friday," at Pit Spitters Park, with a fireworks display after the game. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
