Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Traverse City, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters drop to a 13-5 record after a 12-8 loss to the Battle Creek Battle Jacks this evening, splitting the series. Despite accumulating 13 hits, the Pit Spitters offense failed to deliver a win in tonight's match up against the Battle Jacks.
On the first Firework Friday night of the season, the Pit Spitters welcomed 3,638 fans to turtle Creek Stadium tonight - the largest crowd to date. The Pit Spitters offense kept fans on their toes throughout the game with 13 hits, and eight runs, but a valiant effort to stay in the game was halted due to a rough day on the mound mixed in with defensive blunders.
Colin Summerhill started the Pit Spitters off with a bang offensively, bringing across RBI Devin Hukill, followed by a wild pitch bringing around Jack Crighton to make it 2-0 ball game early. The Battle Jacks responded quickly in the top of the second on a Cooper Middleton double to right field scoring Charlie Rhee and Blake Mcrae bringing the score to 2-2. Battle Jacks poured on the runs in the top of the third, as back-to-back RBI singles from Fisher Pyatt and Charlie Rhee made it 7-2 Jacks ball game. A Battle Jacks RBI groundout followed shortly after bringing across Charlie Rhee to make it 8-2. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pit Spitters rallied mounting a five-run inning capped off by a Colin Summerhill double, bringing around three runs to make it an 8-7 ball game. The Battle Jacks bats weren't finished adding three more runs in the top of the fifth, when JT Sokolove singled to center bringing around two runs, making it 10-7. Nikolas Clark scored from third on a wild pitch, extending the Battle Jacks' lead to 11-7. The Jacks tacked on one more in the top of the 6th after a single to right field by Rhee. Both teams' offense stayed quiet until the Pit Spitters found themselves down to their final half of the inning in the bottom of the ninth. It looked like things could turn around when the Pit Spitters got two runners on quickly, accumulating only one out. POSITION Zach Johnson flew out for our number one with Camden Traficante, on deck and Devin Hukill in the hole. Traficante hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Cooper Erikson to make it 12-8, before Devin Hukill was called out on strike three, ending the game with a final score of 12-8.
The Pit Spitters drop to 13-5 on the season, as the Battle Jacks improve to 6-11. Pit Spitters starting pitcher Nick Powers (2-1) made his third start of the season. Powers threw three innings, giving up seven hits and six runs, recording his first loss of the season. Nathan Dvorsky (0-0) pitched an inning and two thirds, giving up three runs on four hits. Holden Wilder (0-0) pitched an inning and a third, giving up two hits on one run. Nico Saldias (0-1) threw two innings of shutout ball, giving up only one hit. Easton Johnson (0-0) finished off the game throwing an inning of scoreless ball.
