Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release

Comstock Park, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters fell just short against the Kalamazoo Growlers on Wednesday, dropping game two 7-4.

The teams played the game at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park, MI, home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

The Growlers jumped out 2-0 on a two-out two-RBI double from Luke Storm in the third. In the fourth, Edgardo Villegas did the same. After a two-out RBI hit from Trey Lipsey, Traverse City found themselves in a 5-0 hole.

The Pit Spitters started coming back in the sixth. Jake Smallwood doubled home the first run. One batter later, Sam Tackett singled home two to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Growlers would capitalize on pitching and catching mistakes in the seventh. A walk led off the inning, and after a stolen base, throwing error and wild pitch that run came in to score. The next batter struck out but reached on a dropped-third strike. A few batters later on a base hit, the Growlers increased the lead to 7-3.

The Pit Spitters added one in the eighth on another Smallwood RBI but left a key run on third. They would get runners on in the ninth but hit into a double play to end the game.

Failure to get runners on cost the Pit Spitters. In five of the first seven innings against the Kalamazoo starter, the Pit Spitters went down in order 1-2-3. Combined with clutch two-out Growler hitting, the Pit Spitters fell behind and couldn't climb back.
