Mallards Play from Behind Early on Road, Split with Woodchucks
June 22, 2022 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Wausau, WI - The Mallards fell behind early in their first trip to Athletic Park this season with a 13-2 loss at the hands of the Wausau Woodchucks. With the Woodchucks win, the season series between the two is now leveled at two a piece.
The early start for Wausau came against Mallards' right hander Kade Lancour (L, 1-1). A leadoff double and single jolted the offense for the Woodchucks who threw up a three spot in the 1st inning of the game. It took Lancour 37 pitches to make it through the first frame, meaning that due to Northwoods League rules, he was unable to continue in the contest. Madison had to quickly warm up Kyle Walter and throw him into the game in the 2nd. Walter was roughed up through ten batters, allowing five earned runs while walking the bases loaded and hitting a batter in the 3rd. The Mallards used Meade Johnson and Markell Dixon to get through almost the next five innings. The brightest spot of the bullpen was the young arm of Tommy Ellisen. The freshman from UCONN has now hurled three consecutive scoreless appearances to be a strong addition to the Ducks bullpen. Ellisen (1.1 IP, 1 BB, 2 K) made for the quickest innings in the field for the Mallards including their only one-two-three inning of the contest. The Woodchucks were led by multi-hit performances from three of their bats. Brent Widder, Zach Levenson, and Hunter Dorraugh combined for seven hits and six runs scored. Levenson mauled the only home run of the game with a two-run blast to left.
The Mallards were only able to garner three hits on Wednesday night against a plethora of 'Chucks pitchers. Josh Caron and Noah Smith were the only batters for the Ducks to reach base multiple times. Caron walked twice and Smith singled and walked. Nick Gonzalez drove in the only RBI in the game with a groundout in the 5th inning.
The Mallards return to Warner Park in Madison for four straight home games and six of their next seven beginning with the Great Lakes East's Battle Creek Battle Jacks with first pitch at 6:35 PM in their first matchup of the season. Coverage can be found on the Northwoods League website under the 'Live Action' tab.
