Huskies Fall to Loggers in Series Opener

Duluth, Minn. - The Duluth Huskies baseball team fell in its series opener versus the La Crosse Loggers, 15-2, at Copeland Park on Tuesday.

A five-run third inning pushed La Crosse ahead for good, before adding four runs in the fifth.

Tying the game at one in the third inning, first baseman Ambren Voitik (Austin Peay) hit an RBI single for his second of the season.

In the third, Duluth right-handed starter Mason Burns surrendered three consecutive two-out RBI doubles.

Then, La Crosse first baseman Luke Leto (Louisiana State) hit a three-run home run to left field in the fourth, increasing the Duluth deficit to 9-1.

While the Huskies (11-11) remained scoreless in the middle innings, the Loggers (13-10) tacked on four runs in the sixth. La Crosse extended its advantage to 13-1, with Duluth right-handed reliever Steen Lane surrendering four total runs on four walks.

A wild pitch from La Crosse left-handed reliever Ryan Sleeper scored Voitik for the final Huskies run in the seventh. Three hits against Huskies right-handler Cameron Demos (Central Arizona College) pushed across two additional runs, thereafter.

In their sixth loss of their eight-game road trip, Duluth relied on five relievers for the final 6 1/3 innings.

As the Huskies dropped their sixth game in seven tries, Burns (0-2) was tacked with the loss. Loggers right-handed starter Brayden Sanders (2-0) garnered the win.

With their second straight loss in their eight-game road trip, Duluth remains in La Crosse to face the Loggers on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
