Piron Homers Twice in Loss to Chukars

August 23, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

Jonathan Piron homered twice but it wasn't enough as the Grand Junction Rockies lost the opening game of a 4-game series to the Idaho Falls Chukars 6-4 Saturday night at Suplizio Field.

Both of Piron's homers were solo shots, giving him nine for the year, most on the club, and it's the third time this season a Rockie has homered twice in a game. Ryan Stephens did it against Idaho Falls on June 18, and Roberto Ramos got it done against Orem on June 23.

Piron put the Rockies on top when he hit his eighth home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the second, but the Chukars answered with three in the third inning to take the lead. D.J. Burt followed a leadoff walk to Jeckson Flores with a double, and he scored when Amalani Fukofuka tripled. Fukofuka scored on the play after a Brendan Rodgers throwing error.

Piron homered with two out in the fourth to bring the Rockies within a run, but the Chukars took advantage of a Chris Rabago throwing error in the sixth, which led to three unearned runs, making it 6-2. The Rockies fought back, but didn't have enough.

In the eighth, Tyler Nevin singled home a run to cut the lead to three, and Piron came up as the tying run, but he struck out against Josh Staumont, who also allowed a run in the ninth, but the Rockies never got the tying run to the plate.

Piron and Stahel were the only Rockies with two hits. Wes Rogers singled, stole second, and scored in the eighth.

Peter Lambert was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs, two earned, in four inning with a season-high six strikeouts. James McMahon allowed three unearned runs in two innings, while Juan Pena, Scott Firth, and Hunter Brothers kept Idaho Falls off the board in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

The loss drops the Rockies to 5-16 in the season half, 25-34 overall. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
