Bristol State Liners News Release

The Bristol Pirates battled the weather and the Johnson City Cardinals on Thursday night, as they snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory.

Third baseman Jesus Valdez scored the first run of the night on an RBI groundout by right fielder Fernando Villegas in the first inning. The Pirates would make it a 2-0 lead in the next inning when catcher Eli Wilson came around to score on a throwing error. Johnson City cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but the Pirates extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when center fielder Daniel Rivero singled to right and Wilson scored on a fielding error.

The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the fourth, and after two scoreless innings for both teams the rain turned from a drizzle to a downpour in the top of the seventh, prompting a 50-minute delay. The Pirates came out firing from the delay, as Wilson scored on an error for the third time in the game to make it a 4-2 lead for Bristol. Cardinals left fielder Jhon Torres hit a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 4-3 game, but Oliver Garcia struck out the next batter to secure the win for the Pirates.

Alex Roth earned his first career win after allowing just two walks with two strikeouts over two innings of relief. Starter Santiago Florez allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over four innings, while Yordi Rosario threw one perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts. Garcia picked up his second save of the year, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over two innings while striking out a season-high four batters.

Valdez led the Pirates at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored, while second baseman Josh Bissonette had the team's only extra-base hit -- a third-inning double. Rivero and shortstop Francisco Acuna were the only other Pirates with a hit in the win, while Wilson finished 0-for-1 with a walk, two hit-by-pitches and three runs scored.

The Pirates (13-16) will go for their first series win in almost two weeks on Friday night, when they take on Johnson City in the series finale. Bristol will send out Tahnaj Thomas to finish off the seven-game road trip, as he comes off an eight-strikeout performance in his last start against Pulaski. The Pirates will then return home on Saturday to open up a three-game series against the Kingsport Mets.
