Pirates' Phil Dumatrait to Rehab With Curve on Friday

ALTOONA, Pa - Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed pitcher Phil Dumatrait will appear for the Altoona Curve in a rehab start on Friday night when the Altoona Curve opens a three-game series against the Trenton Thunder (AA - New York Yankees) at 7:05 p.m.
Dumatrait was placed on the 60-day Disabled List by the Pirates at the start of the 2009 season after suffering setbacks following arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder. The 28-year old went 3-4 with a 5.26 ERA in 2008 for Pittsburgh, making 21 total appearances and 11 starts.
The Bakersfield, CA native began his minor-league rehabilitation in Bradenton last week, pitching four shutout innings for the Gulf Coast League Pirates in a start against the GCL Braves. Dumatrait allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two batters. On July 26, Dumatrait appeared for the State College Spikes (Short Season - A) and suffered the loss to the Batavia Muckdogs, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits over 5.0 innings and striking out four.
Originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the first round (22nd overall) in the 2000 June Draft out of Bakersfield Junior College, Dumatrait was dealt to the Cincinnati Reds organization towards the July 2003 trading deadline in a deal for pitcher Scott Williamson. In October 2007 Pittsburgh claimed him off waivers from the Reds.
Dumatrait will become the 26th player the Pittsburgh Pirates have sent to the Altoona Curve on a rehab assignment in franchise history. Last season, four players (SS Jack Wilson, C Ryan Doumit, OF Chris Duffy and RHP Matt Capps) rehabbed with the Curve.
