Defenders Fall to Baysox
July 29, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
BOWIE, MD- Before the first pitch was thrown things drastically changed for the Defenders, RHP-Tim Alderson was traded to Pittsburgh for 2B-Freddy Sanchez. The problem was that Alderson was supposed to start Wednesday night's game but the show went on without him and Connecticut fell 6-2 to Bowie at Prince George's Stadium.
The Baysox took full advantage of spot starter RHP-Garrett Broshuis (2-2) who was informed about an hour and half before he hurled his first pitch. Bowie scored four runs in the first off four hits, big two RBI singles by DH-Paco Figueroa and SS-Robert Valido to cruise to a 2-1 lead in the best of four series. Broshuis suffered his second loss of the season allowing the four earned runs, walked one and fanning one.
With all the limitations, Connecticut kept things close trimming the lead in half in the third. 3B-Sharlon Schoop blasted his second homer of the season and 1B-Brett Pill drove in 2B-Brock Bond with an RBI single. Unfortunately that would be all the offense they receive for the night.
Connecticut received great support from their position players who made their professional pitching debuts to help a fatigued and bruised bullpen. Bobby Felmy tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowed one hit and walked one. Tyler LaTorre allowed one earned run off of one hit and walked a pair in one inning of work. Mike Mooney pitched one scoreless inning and walked one. Adam Witter allowed one earned run off of two hits in one inning.
Bowie's starter RHP-Ryohei Tanaka (1-1) was solid tossing a season high seven innings allowing two earned runs off of five hits, walked one and struck out a season high seven while earning his first win.
Connecticut will regroup and seek out a series split tomorrow morning at 11:05am in the series finale. LHP-Jesse English (7-6) takes the bump for the Defenders and Bowie counters with RHP-Brandon Erbe (1-3).
Fans can catch all the action on ctdefenders.com starting at 10:50am with the Defenders Pre-Game Show on the Defenders Radio Network.
