July 17, 2019 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Bristol State Liners News Release
The Bristol Pirates came up 90 feet short of tying the game on Tuesday night, as they fell 3-2 in the series finale with Pulaski.
The loss marked the first time in over 14 years that Bristol was swept on the road by Pulaski. The Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, after an RBI single by second baseman Aaron Shackelford and an RBI double by first baseman Ernny Ordonez. Pulaski cut the lead to one on a solo home run from designated hitter Nelson Alvarez in the second inning, before catcher Saul Torres launched a two-out, two-run, go-ahead home run in the third inning to give Pulaski a 3-2 lead.
Ordonez would lead off the top of the ninth inning with a double, but he was left stranded at third to end the game as the Pirates dropped their fourth straight.
Starter Dante Mendoza earned his first loss of the season, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on three hits and three walks over four innings of work while striking out five. Trey McGough had a career night on Tuesday, allowing no runs on one hit over a career-high three innings with a career-high five strikeouts. C.J. Dandeneau recorded one strikeout in one perfect inning of relief, as he lowered his season ERA to 1.86.
Ordonez led the Pirates at the plate, ending the night 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Shackelford was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while left fielder Jean Eusebio, right fielder Fernando Villegas and third baseman Matt Morrow each had one hit in the loss.
The Pirates (12-15) will begin a three-game series on Wednesday night when they travel to face Johnson City at 6:30. Adrian Florencio will start for Bristol, as he currently owns a 1-1 record and 4.42 ERA over 18 1/3 innings. Florencio's last start came against Johnson City, where he set a career-high with six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings while allowing two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks.
