Pirates Doomed in Seventh
August 23, 2018 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Bristol State Liners News Release
A nine-run seventh inning cost the Bristol Pirates on Thursday night, as they were swept by the Kingsport Mets following a 15-7 loss in the series finale.
The loss dropped the Pirates to three games behind the Mets for second place in the Appalachian League West Division with six games remaining in the regular season. In the event the Pirates and Mets end the season in a tie, Kingsport now holds the tiebreaker with a 6-3 advantage over Bristol in the season series.
Bristol had three pitchers allow five runs each in the loss. Starter Denny Roman allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out seven over four innings before he was ejected along with manager Miguel Perez in the fifth inning after Roman hit Mets center fielder Jarred Kelenic with his first pitch of the inning. John O'Reilly replaced Roman and allowed five runs -- four earned -- on four hits and three walks over two innings to earn his first career loss. Vince Deyzel allowed five runs on three hits and three walks over 2/3 innings, as Jacob Webb then came on to throw 1 1/3 perfect innings to close out the game.
Making just his fifth appearance with Bristol, Patrick Dorrian led the team on offense with a 3-for-4 performance with two triples, one walk, one RBI and two runs scored. Dorrian was the first Bristol player to triple twice in a game since Juan Ramirez accomplished the feat on June 30, 2012 in a 13-12 win over the Princeton Rays.
Chase Lambert was the only other Pirate with a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-4 with one run, two RBI, a stolen base and his first career triple. Brendt Citta's lone hit of the night was a game-tying home run to center field in the second inning for his second career home run.
The Pirates (29-33) return home on Friday night to begin their final home stand of the regular season. They will host the Appalachian League West Division-leading Elizabethton Twins for a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
