Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Valley Pippins avoided a sweep at the hands of the Walla Walla Sweets with a 7-2 win over the Sweets Wednesday night at County Stadium.

After giving up two runs in the 1 st inning each of the first two games in the series, Pippins (16-10 overall, 13-8 West Coast League) shut the Sweets down in order in the 1 st, before Reid Martinez's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame put Yakima Valley ahead 1-0 after the 1 st inning.

The Sweets (8-13) tied the game with a run in the 2 nd, before adding another run in the 3 rd to take a 2-1 advantage. That lead would be short-lived for Walla Walla, as Martinez singled in another run in the bottom of the 3 rd to tie the game at 2.

A bases-loaded walk for Ryan Rosa in the bottom of the 4 th gave the Pippins the lead for good, and they would add to it with two more runs in the bottom of the 5 th, all part of a two-out rally.

Vince Fernandez singled in a run in the 6 th, before Martinez would put the final mark on a 2-3 night in the bottom of the 8th, with another RBI. The three RBI brought Martinez's total to 12, second on the team behind the 16 of Fernandez.

On the mound, Eli Morgan was impressive yet again, dealing six innings, while allowing just four hits and one earned run. The right-handed pitcher walked three, while striking out five to improve to 4-0 on the young season. Matt Trask worked one scoreless inning, while Kelly Fitzpatrick struck out five of the six hitters he faced in his two innings of work to finish out the game.

After taking one of three from the Sweets, the series now shifts to Walla Walla starting Thursday night for a three-game series at Borleske Stadium. First pitch on Thursday is set for 7:05 p.m. and Andrew Woods is scheduled to start for the Pippins.
