Bats Boom Again for HarbourCats

Maybe it's the red-hot red hats. Maybe the bad luck has been used up already.

Whatever it is, the Victoria HarbourCats are on a tear, scoring 17 more runs on Wednesday night in completing a series sweep over the visiting Kitsap BlueJackets. With that 17-3 score, the HarbourCats ended up with a 40-8 advantage in runs over their West Division rivals in the games played at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park, set around the Canada Day holiday.

In front of an announced crowd of 1,071, and with Elvis impersonator EJ Smith keeping the fans smiling, the HarbourCats again exploded in the first inning with five runs -- a day after scoring seven in the first inning. That had to impress the Canadian baseball royalty in the crowd -- ex-Blue Jays Roberto Alomar, Devon White, Brian McRae and Jesse Barfield, who helped throw out the first pitch. All signed autographs, and Alomar even threw t-shirts into the crowd.

Elvis's blue suede shoes watched the HarbourCats pound out 21 hits, compared to just seven from the visitors. Sean Watkins was 4-4 with four runs scored and an RBI, Wyler Smith was 4-4 with two runs and four RBIs, Alex DeGoti drove in four runs without registering a hit, and Hunter Mercado-Hood was stellar again, going 2-4 with four driven in. Gabe Clark scored three runs, while Noah Cummings was 3-6 and Jake Lesinski was 3-4.

Mercado-Hood leads the WCL with 24 RBIs.

Starting pitcher Don Sullivan, who will now be away from the team for a week due to academic issues, got his first West Coast League win with five innings of work. Alex FaGalde, Angel Delgado and Mark Marinch mopped up.

Both teams now have Thursday off before renewing acquaintances again in Silverdale, WA, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. The three-game set goes Friday-Saturday-Sunday, and neither team has declared its starting rotation for the weekend.

The HarbourCats improved to 9-12 and leap-frogged Kitsap to escape last place in the West Division. The BlueJackets are 8-12.
