Spokane Indians News Release
SPOKANE, WA - Young right-hander Tyler Phillips pitched like a seasoned veteran in his first pro start as the 18-year-old from Lumberton, NJ steered the Indians to a 5-0 victory over the Vancouver Canadians. Phillips twirled five scoreless frames and was backed up by a strong showing from the offense as the Indians recorded their first win of 2016 in front of 6,821 fans at Avista Stadium for Yoke's $1 Family Feast Night presented by Yoke's Fresh Market, 92.9 ZZU, and Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living.
A 16th round draft choice in 2015, Phillips pitched sparingly last season after a taxing workload his senior season of high school. He didn't look like a pitcher making his first start in over a year however, as he worked a 1-2-3 first inning and never looked back, permitting just three total baserunners while striking out four and walking one.
The Indians' lineup carried over their momentum from last night into today's game, scoring runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to race out to a 3-0 lead. Spokane added another in the sixth when Seth Spivey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and rounded out the scoring with a Chad Smith RBI double in the eighth.
Spivey, Josh Merrigan, and Stephen Lohr each picked up a pair of hits while relievers C.D. Pelham, Alex Daniele, Christian Torres, and Kaleb Fontenot each contributed a scoreless inning to the shutout.
