Hillsboro Hops News Release
KEIZER, ORE. --- Salem-Keizer avenged Friday's opening night loss in a big way on Saturday, scoring 14 runs over four innings en route to a 14-3 win over the Hillsboro Hops.
Things started on the right foot for the Hops, as second baseman Paxton De La Garza lined a sacrifice fly to the fence in left in his first professional plate appearance. It was 1-0 Hillsboro in the top of the second.
Hillsboro starter Tyler Mark retired the first seven hitters to face him, until Salem-Keizer's Ashford Fulmer reached base on a controversial call in the third inning. An inside fastball was initially ruled to have hit the knob of Fulmer's bat. It caromed up along the first base line, with Mark throwing to first for the out. After an argument from Salem-Keizer manager Kyle Haines, the umpires conferred and changed the call, ruling Fulmer had been hit by a pitch. Six batters later, the Volcanoes had scored four times, highlighted by a two-run, two-out pop double by John Riley, which the Hops lost in the twilight sky.
After Mark allowed two more runs in the fourth, Hillsboro's Jose Martinez struggled in the fifth. He allowed seven runs (though just two were earned) on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen, while recording only one out.
The highlight of the night for Hillsboro? Right fielder Billy Endris, the Diamondbacks' 35th-round draft choice this year out of Florida Atlantic University, homered in his first professional game (his second at-bat) in the top of the fifth.
Three Hillsboro pitchers also made their pro debuts: right-hander Tommy Eveld allowed one run in 1.2 innings pitched, while righty Jake Winston and lefty Jordan Watson each threw a scoreless frame.
Hillsboro (1-1) and Salem-Keizer (1-1) meet on Sunday at 5:05 PM in the final game of the season-opening road trip. The radio pregame show begins at 4:30 on Rip City Radio 620 AM and www.RipCityRadio.com.
