Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

Allentown, Pa. - IronPigs pitcher Phil Klein-who fanned a career-high 11 batters on Sunday vs. Indianapolis-was named International League Pitcher of the Week for August 8-14, as announced by league officials today. Klein is the fifth Lehigh Valley pitcher to win Pitcher of the Week this season following Zach Eflin (April 11-17), Ben Lively (June 6-12), David Buchanan (July 18-24) and Adam Morgan (August 1-7) who also accomplished the feat.

In two starts last week, the Columbus, Ohio native was 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 13.0 IP while walking two and fanning 21.

On Tuesday at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Klein allowed just one run on four hits to go along with 10 strikeouts over five innings of work in a no-decision. The right-hander tied a franchise record with seven consecutive strikeouts to end his outing.

In a 1-0 win on Sunday vs. Indianapolis, the Youngstown State University product earned the win after surrendering two hits while walking two and fanning the 11 batters in 8.0 IP. The eight innings of work also ties a career-high for Klein.

Since being claimed off waivers from the Rangers in June, Klein is 2-1 with a 1.66 ERA in 10 G (6 GS) and has struck out 46 batters in 38.0 IP (10.8 SO/9.0 IP).

The 27-year-old was originally selected by Texas in the 30th round of the 2013 draft out of Youngstown State.

Along with becoming the fifth IronPigs pitcher to earn weekly honors this season, Klein is the 16th pitcher in franchise history to receive Pitcher of the Week honors. Overall, it is the 18th time that a Lehigh Valley pitcher has been selected as RHP Justin Lehr and LHP Greg Smith both earned the distinction twice.
