CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston starter David Phelps pitched eight shutout innings and closer Pat Venditte slammed the door as the RiverDogs whitewashed the Augusta GreenJackets, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of 2,542 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Retiring 13 consecutive batters at one stretch, Phelps, who improved his record to 6-1, surrendered three hits while walking only two and striking out five. In facing 28 batters, Phelps induced 11 groundouts and six flyouts.

Venditte, pro baseball's only ambidextrous pitcher, entered the game with runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth inning and with the aid of a game-ending double-play, collected his league-leading 20th save of the season. He faced only two batters, throwing right-handed to both.

With the victory, the RiverDogs remain in first place in the Southern Division with a 35-24 record while the GreenJackets fall to 28-30.

Charleston pounced to a 1-0 advantage in the fourth when David Adams smacked a leadoff single, advanced to second on a walk, scooted to third on a groundout and scored on a fielding error by Augusta third baseman Charlie Culberson.

The RiverDogs posted their second run in the eighth inning when Adams doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on sacrifice fly to right by Melky Mesa.

Charleston recorded five hits with Adams securing two while Augusta had three with no individual posting more than one.

The game marked the RiverDogs' fifth shutout of the season.

GreenJackets starter Kyle Nicholson (4-6) went seven full innings and allowed four hits while walking three and fanning four. Reliever Justin Fitzgerald pitched the eighth and allowed an unearned run on a hit and struck out two.

Charleston's turns to right-hander Casey Erickson (3-2, 1.17 ERA) in the series finale Thursday at 7:05 p.m. as Augusta counters with southpaw Eric Surkamp (3-2, 3.88 ERA).
