Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - For the second straight start Mike Loree kept an offense guessing and second guessing, shutting down the Charleston RiverDogs for seven innings in a 2-0 Augusta GreenJackets win in the opener of a six-game road trip. The Jackets have now won four in a row to pull within a game of the .500 mark.
Loree (3-4) gave up just three hits in his seven shutout frames with two walks and six strikeouts to pick up his second win in a row. With the results of his last start, Loree has now been unscored upon in his last 14 innings of work.
The Jackets scored early when Juan Perez reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Ehire Adrianza's single to take a second-inning lead. Loree kept the âDogs at bay until Augusta could add another in the sixth when Josh Mazzola's RBI double brought home Ben Woodbury to stretch the lead to 2-0 but could manage no further insurance. Augusta left four runners aboard over the final four innings.
Charleston's Hector Noesi - a 2009 All-Star - did his best to keep the RiverDogs in the game through eight-plus innings. Noesi (2-3) allowed both runs in the contest on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Augusta's bullpen was solid as a rock, firing two scoreless frames in relief of Loree. Chris Wilson, in his first game since May 15th due to a stay on the disabled list following an appendectomy, struck out the side in the eighth in his return to the Jackets pitching staff. New closer Edwin Quirarte pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season, leaving the league's home run leader Melky Mesa in the on-deck circle.
The Jackets will send Eric Surkamp (3-2, 3.88) to the mound as they try and even their record at .500 and equal their longest winning streak of the season at five games. He'll be opposed by fellow lefty David Phelps (5-1, 3.41). First pitch from Charleston comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
