Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators struck for five unearned runs in the seventh inning to claim a 9-6 victory against the Hickory Crawdads before 2,002 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Intimidators (31-28) quickly put three runs on the board against RHP Wilmer Font, who went the first 1.2 innings on the mound. RHP Cody Eppley took over on the mound and found the final out in the second, before dealing four more scoreless frames to keep Kannapolis at three runs and give the Crawdads time to come back. Eppley finished with 4.1 innings worked, allowing only one hit and striking out three.
The Crawdads (28-29) began the comeback against RHP Greg Infante in the bottom of the second inning, when LF Cristian Santana started the frame with a single and moved to second on a 2B Jake Kaase walk. With one out later in the inning, SS Leury Garcia brought Santana in from second base with an RBI single to get Hickory on the board.
The Crawdads continued to chip away in the bottom of the third inning. DH Mike Hollander started the inning with a walk and advanced to second base when RF Mike Bianucci was hit by a pitch with one out in the frame. 3B Matt West then lined a pitch into left field to bring Hollander in from second base with an RBI single and bring the Crawdads within one run of tying the game, 3-2.
Hickory overtook Kannapolis on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth frame, plating two to move ahead, 4-3. CF Cody Podraza started the inning with a leadoff walk and was followed an out later by a walk drawn by 1B Erik Morrison. Bianucci then blooped a single to shallow right field to load the bases with just one out. Infante won the battle against West with a strikeout to put two outs on the board. With the bases still loaded, LF Cristian Santana came through with a two-out, two-run single to left field, scoring Podraza and Morrison and lifting the Crawdads into their first lead of the game.
However, Kannapolis bounced back with five unearned runs against RHP Tyler Tufts (2-1) in the top of the seventh inning to retake the lead, 8-4. An error in the inning gave Kannapolis an extra out, which they took full advantage of during the two-out, bases loaded rally. Hickory responded with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the inning, when Bianucci scored from first on a single by West and an error charged to CF Sergio Morales in the field, making it 8-5 through eight.
Kannapolis DH Seth Loman opened the top of the ninth with a solo home run to right field, accounting for the lone earned run allowed by Tufts and stretching the lead back to four. Bianucci responded with a solo shot with two out in the bottom of the inning, but RHP Den Remenowsky then found the final out to close the game and the 9-6 win for the Intimidators. Tufts was tagged with his first loss of the season, while RHP Tyson Corley (3-0) earned the win for Kannapolis.
