Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants added a pitcher on Thursday who has caught the eye of major league organizations several times. Pheasants manager Steve Shirley announced the acquisition of Cody Evans from the Laredo Lemurs in exchange for a player to be named later.

Evans, 28, briefly served as the closer with the Amarillo Sox last season. He converted all four save opportunities, going 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA and nine strikeouts in seven games. In August, he signed with the Los Angeles Angels for his second stint in affiliated ball. With Class A Inland Empire, Evans posted a 2-0 mark with a 3.18 ERA in seven games. This spring Evans was in minor-league spring training with the Texas Rangers.

The right-hander was an Arizona Diamondbacks' 10th-round draft pick in 2005 out of Long Beach State University. The Newport Beach, Calif., spent five years in their system, including four games with Triple-A Tucson in 2008. Evans moved to independent baseball in 2010 with the now-defunct Schaumburg Flyers.

In his career, Evans has a 30-44 record with a 5.21 ERA and 355 strikeouts. His league status is LS-4.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants begin their 20th-anniversary season at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 when they host the Sioux City Explorers. Information about season tickets and group outings is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
