Pheasants Stumble in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants came up on the losing end of a pitcher's battle on Friday night, falling 4-2 to the St. Paul Saints. The Pheasants dropped to 17-6 in the second half and 49-22 overall. They still maintain the league's best record and hold first place in the North Division.

Starter Ben Moore pitched deep into the ball game, but the Pheasants' bats were held quiet by the St. Paul pitching staff. Starter Kyle Foster tossed six innings, limiting the Pheasants to six hits and two runs. He walked three and matched a season high with eight strikeouts. Reliever Jon Plefka (5-1) hurled two scoreless innings of relief. The Saints' arms struck out 13 Pheasants overall.

St. Paul slugger Ole Shedon broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI groundout. Sheldon had a run-scoring groundout in the first and a solo home run in the third to finish 1-for-4 with three RBI. Brandon Carter was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Moore (9-6) three 7 2/3 innings and allowed just three hits, but he allowed all four runs for the loss. His four strikeouts bolstered his season total to 104. Moore is making a bid to break the league's single season strikeout record of 111. He has also overtaken second place all-time in league history with 311 strikeouts. Ft. Worth's Joel Kirsten, still active, is first.

Trevor Lawhorn swatted an RBI triple in the sixth inning to cut the St. Paul lead to 2-1. Kevin Carby tied the game in the seventh with a run-scoring groundout. Brandon Sing with the only Pheasant with multiple hits, collecting two doubles.

Saints closer Matt Meyer struck out the Sioux Falls side in a perfect ninth and his sixth save.
