ST. PAUL, MN (July 30, 2010) - It may have been the "Game of the Living Dead" on Friday night at Midway Stadium, but the St. Paul Saints showed signs of life defeating the first place Sioux Falls Pheasants 4-2 in front of 5,601.

The charge was led by the Saints pitching staff and it began with starter Kyle Foster. He had given up 11 runs in his last two starts, but he was on his game Friday. Foster cruised through the first three innings, but in the fourth he ran into his first bit of trouble. With the bases loaded and one out he got Eddy Rodriguez to hit a grounder to Brad Miller at third who threw home for the first out and Gerard Haran fired to first for the inning ending double play. While Foster would give up single runs in the sixth and seventh he went 6.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out eight.

The bullpen took over for Foster and Jon Plefka came on in relief with two on and nobody out in the seventh with the Saints clinging to a 2-1 lead. With runners at second and third Plefka got Kevin Carby to hit into an RBI ground out tying the game at two. With the infield in Tim Hutting hit a grounder to second and Brandon Carter fired to the plate nailing Gus Milner. After walking Beau Torbert and hitting Brandon Sing to load the bases Plefka got Trevor Lawhorn to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Plefka went 2.0 hitless innings walking two and striking out two.

With the game tied at two in the eighth the Saints got the runs they needed. With one out Josh Alley walked for the second time in the game, the 14th consecutive game he has walked. Alley stole second and went to third on Carter's single. Carter finished the night 3-4 with a double and a run scored. Ole Sheldon followed with a little tapper that just cleared pitcher Ben Moore's glove, going to the shortstop Hutting who threw out Sheldon, but Alley was able to score giving the Saints a 3-2 lead. After Jason Cooper was hit by a pitch Edgard Clemente singled home Carter to give the Saints a two-run lead.

That meant closer Matt Meyer came on in the ninth and he shut down the top three hitters in the Pheasants line up striking out all three to earn his sixth save of the season. The Saints three pitchers combined to strike out a season high 13.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Alley walked, moved to third on a single by Carter and scored on Sheldon's groundout.

In the third Sheldon hit a solo homer to left, his 16th of the season, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead.

The final game of the four game series is Saturday night at Midway Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (7-5, 4.33) to the mound against Pheasants LHP Chris Salberg (9-0, 3.21). It is Dancing with the Mascots presented by HealthPartners and the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Saints Team Card Set. The game can be seen on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
