Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas - One pitch away from sending Friday night's game to the eighth inning tied at two, Shreveport-Bossier Captains righty Osvaldo Rodriguez hung a 1-2 curveball to the Fort Worth Cats' Kevin Thompson, who deposited it over the leftfield wall for his first Cats homer of the season, giving Fort Worth a 4-2 lead it would not relinquish, as the Cats beat the Captains 7-4.

Rodriguez (10-2) fell behind early, giving up a double to John Allen leading off the second, before a single and a sacrifice fly brought him home. Then, Brian Fryer hit the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth for a solo homer to left, doubling the Cats' lead.

After not threatening much in the first four innings against Dwayne Pollok (7-5), the Captains (40-29, 11-11 2nd half) finally got on the scoreboard after a leadoff walk in the fifth to Joe Urtuzuastegui. A sacrifice bunt and a groundout sent him to third, before Brian Peterson's two-out, two-strike single made it 2-1.

Urtuzuastegui struck again leading off the seventh, with a long home run off Pollok to tie the game, his second of the season. But Pollok got around a two-runner jam later that frame to complete seven innings with seven hits, two walks and seven strikeouts to earn the victory.

In the bottom of the sevenh, Nick McCoola singled with one out, and then stole second on a botched hit-and-run when the Captains felt that shortstop Uriak Marquez had tagged McCoola, but third base umpire Dale Luker ruled that he did not. Instead, the inning continued for Thompson, who gave the Cats (29-40, 9-12) the lead.

Marcus Salmon allowed three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, which proved big when Christopher Garcia's fourth hit of the game plated two runs in the top of the ninth against Gary Lee. Cats manager Chad Tredaway summoned closer Dustin Cameron, and after an error by shortstop Cory Morales brought the possible tying run to the plate, Cameron got Bryan Sabatella to fly out to right to give the reliever his 15th save of 2010.

Notes: The Cats have 35 hits in 20 innings this series.Garcia had four singles and an intentional walk.Urtuzuastegui also had a double and scored three runs...Seven of the nine Fort Worth hitters had at least one hit, and five had at least two.
