SHREVEPORT, La. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants could not hold a lead against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains on Wednesday night, losing 5-4 to split the brief two-game series. The Pheasants record fell to 54-26 overall, still the best in the American Association. They are in first place in the North Division.
Trailing 4-3, the Captains scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning on a pair of RBI singles from Jorge Alvarez and Andres Rodriguez. The Captains were helped by two wild pitches thrown by Pheasants reliever Brandon Rapoza (2-1). Rapoza lost for the first time this year.
The Pheasants led 3-0 after a two-run home run by Eddy Rodriguez in the second and Beau Torbert's solo blast in the sixth, his 20th of the year. But the Captains evened the game in the sixth inning with a base hit and bunt single. Christopher Garcia's three-run round-tripper followed, tying the game at 3-3.
Torbert doubled in Reggie Abercrombie in the eighth inning to give the Pheasants a 4-3 lead. Torbert was 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI.
Jameson Maj (4-0) earned the win for pitching the eighth inning and Hector Carrasco tossed a perfect ninth inning for his 17th save.
The Pheasants are off for two days and begin a three-game series with the Wichita Wingnuts on Saturday, August 14. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230 AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
