El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso, TX - Grand Prairie won their fifth straight game over El Paso as they topped the Diablos 8-5 on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium. El Paso was put in an 8-1 hole and would climb out of it to make it a game down the stretch, but couldn't complete the comeback. The Diablos loss is their twelfth straight as the AirHogs win their sixth straight game.
Grand Prairie, for the second straight night, would take the lead in the first inning on a David Espinosa two out single. El Paso would fight back to tie the game at one in the third inning on a Hector Bernal run scoring single. Grand Prairie would open up an 8-1 lead after scoring three in the fifth and four more in the sixth. The lead was cut to 8-4 when El Paso scored three in the sixth on two sacrifice flys and a bases loaded hit batter. El Paso added another run in the seventh inning on a Benji Johnson bases loaded infield ground ball, but missed out on much more. They had the bases loaded with one out and got nothing more out of the rally. Both bullpens were very good down the stretch. The last seven would get sat down in order for the Diablos while the last nine went in order for Grand Prairie.
El Paso's offense outhit the AirHogs 12-9 but Grand Prairie was much more economical with their hits. Five out of the nine hits ended up scoring runs. Kyle Nichols went 3-5 with a double to lead the Diablos offense. Bryon Smith went 2-5 while Benji Johnson went 2-4 with an RBI. Jeff Vincent also added two hits and an RBI.
Shaun Ellis (8-4) made the start for El Paso and started well as he struck out five through the first three innings. He had allowed just one run through four innings but then ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh. Ellis ended the night pitching one out into the sixth inning allowing six earned runs on seven hits. He is still winless since July 14. The win went to Grand Prairie's Daniel Schmidt (4-2) who also pitched one out into the sixth inning and allowed four runs on nine hits. It is his second win this season against El Paso.
The Diablos will try and salvage one out of the three game series on Thursday night. Aaron Kalb (2-4, 4.79) will head to the bump for El Paso against Chris Martin (2-0, 1.65). It is a Thirsty Thursday as the Diablos offer one dollar beer. Game time is set for 7:05. Fans can listen in online at www.diablos.com.
