Phantoms Sign Forward Max Ellis to USHL Tender
April 9, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Phantoms have signed forward Max Ellis to a USHL tender. Ellis, a native of Canton, MI, is Youngstown's second and final tender signing prior to the USHL Phase I Draft.
"It feels amazing to sign my tender and know that I am going to continue my development path and career in such a great place. The great coaching staff, General Manager Jason Koehler, and the group of guys on the team have made me feel welcomed. With their success in developing players, it makes me really excited to call Youngstown home," Ellis said.
Ellis is currently a high school sophomore and part of the Detroit Honeybaked U16 AAA program. In 23 games with Honeybaked, Ellis has 24 points (11G-13A), tied for 7th overall in the HPHL. Ellis is a three-time World Invitational Champion, including being named 2013 World Invitational MVP. He also won the 2015 National Championship with Detroit Honeybaked, and was a Silver Sticks Champion in 2013. The 5'10, 145 pound right-shot forward is uncommitted to a NCAA program.
"In our eyes, Max Ellis is one of the highest skilled forwards in the 2000 birth class. We have watched him play at a high caliber all season long, and are excited for the opportunity to welcome him into our family. Max reminds me of former Phantom forward and current leading scorer for the Quinnipiac Bobcats, Sam Anas. Max possesses the same high hockey IQ and playmaking ability, and we see him having a similar development here in Youngstown," said Phantoms General Manager Jason Koehler.
With this signing, Youngstown will be forfeiting its second round pick in the 2016 USHL Phase 1 Draft on May 2nd.
Ellis is just the sixth player to sign a USHL tender in Phantoms team history. 2015 first round NHL draft pick Kyle Connor (Winnipeg Jets) became Youngstown's first tender back in 2012, along with JJ Piccinich, who was also a fourth round NHL Draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2014. Youngstown has tendered one player in each of the past two seasons, current Phantoms defenseman Ty Farmer was tendered in 2014, while Jacob Tortora was the Phantoms lone signing in 2015. The Phantoms also tendered 2000 born Ohio native Curtis Hall back in February.
United States Hockey League teams are allowed to add, or "tender", up to two players that are eligible for Phase I of the upcoming draft to their roster, prior to the draft. If a team decides to use one of their tenders on a player, that team forfeits one or both of their first two round selections.
