Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa - Three quick goals in the second period broke a 2-2 tie, and led to the Dubuque Fighting Saints' rout of the Waterloo Black Hawks at the Young Arena on Saturday night by a score of 6-2. As a result of the win, and Green Bay's win in Lincoln, the Fighting Saints will take on the Gamblers starting at the Resch Center.
Brett Boeing cued the goal barrage with a goal of his own with about five minutes to go on the period. On the ensuing shift, Boeing set up Michael O'Leary with a cross-crease dish for his eighth goal of the season. Then, one shift later, following up a Zach Solow shot towards the net, Evan Smith cleaned up the rebound to put the Fighting Saints up 5-2 at the end of the second period.
The three goals were scored in a two-minute span. It answered a Yuri Terao power play goal early in the second period. A wired one-timer from the top of the left circle found a way through Hunter Miska. The Saints' backstop was only bested by Kevin Charyszyn in the first period aside from that goal. It was Miska's 32nd win of the season for the Saints.
Garrett Metcalf did not have as good of a night for Waterloo, beaten for six goals on the night. The Anaheim Ducks draft pick coughed the puck up behind his net in the opening minutes of the game to Colin Theisen, who wrapped the puck around into the empty net to make it 1-0 Dubuque.
In the same period, following a major penalty from defenseman Hank Sorenson, Willie Knierim scored his 14th tally of the season, putting on a couple of stickhandles out in front of Metcalf's net, and depositing the puck on the backhand to the top shelf, extending the lead to 2-0.
A chippy affair saw 29-minutes worth of penalties called, and power play goals on both sides.
The Fighting Saints ended the regular season with a 39-19-2 record, and have secured the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
The first round of the playoffs begin in Green Bay. Broadcasts of the first two games of the series will be available on the flagship station of Fighting Saints Hockey, Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, FASTHockey.
