Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms defeated the USA NTDP U-18s 2-0 in the final game of the USHL Pittsburgh Showcase. The contest was a physical affair, as the two teams combined for 28 penalties, including two game misconducts for USA.

The two teams finished the first period scoreless after a few big power play saves by Phantoms goalie Ryan Bednard. It wouldn't take long to break the tie, as Lukas Craggs got Youngstown on the board just 1:11 into the second period. Craggs goal came right on the doorstep off a beautiful feed from Garrett Hall. Yushiro Hirano had the secondary assist on the Craggs goal.

Team USA thought they tied the game halfway through the second period, however the goal was waved off due to high sticking. USA had several chances to equalize, but Bednard made multiple big saves to keep USA scoreless.

The Phantoms biggest test of the night came in the beginning of the third period, as USA went on a 5 on 3 advantage. Youngstown survived behind excellent penalty killing by Lukas Craggs, and Cam Morrison.

Youngstown would claim a two-goal advantage on the power play just over halfway into the third period after Ty Farmer's shot from the point was deflected in by James Winkler.

Phantoms goalie Ryan Bednard was named player of the game with a 34-save shutout.

The Phantoms will be back in action against USA when they open their season Saturday, September 26 at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown.
