Madison Capitols News Release

Middleton, WI - The Madison Capitols received goals from six different players in an offensive explosion during a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Steel on Saturday night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.

For a third straight preseason game, Madison got on the board first in the opening frame, as Tony Stillwell found a seam from the point on the power play, beating Kris Carlson to make it 1-0 at 3:27.

Chicago would answer through just over seven minutes later, as Nick Olczyk slid a neat pass from behind the goal line to a crashing Jack Doremus, who beat Garrett Metcalf to tie the score, 1-1.

Metcalf was strong in a first period that saw Chicago outshoot the Capitols 11-3, as the Anaheim Ducks prospect turned aside ten offerings.

The second period quickly turned into a roller-coaster with teams trading scores and penalties. First, Madison raced out to a 3-1 lead in the span of just 2:07.

To kick off the scoring bonanza, a couple of Capitols' youngsters got on the board, as 16-year-old Wisconsin Badgers commit Mick Messner fired a gorgeous two-on-one pass to 17-year-old Garrett Klee, who finished it off at 2:35.

Then at 4:42, Sam McCormick calmly settled a lofting centering pass from Luke McElhenie and shoveled a backhander past Carlson to extend the lead to 3-1.

Chicago again responded near the middle of the frame, as Lucas Michaud tucked a shot in after stepping out of the left corner at 11:32 on a Steel power play.

With the score 3-2, Madison again had a rebuttal to regain the two-goal edge, as the puck again founds its way into the air near the crease. Alexandre Payusov continued his red-hot preseason, picking up his third goal in as many games with a baseball swing at the puck at 17:15. Tommy Muck picked up his second assist of the evening on the Payusov marker, which put the Capitols ahead 4-2.

However, Madison could not withstand a late push from Chicago, as Brandon Duhaime took a feed from the left circle and surprised Metcalf with a low wrist shot to draw the Steel to within one goal, 4-3, at 19:35.

The Steel quickly rode their late second period momentum into the third, as Connor Murphy came out from behind the net and surprised Metcalf to tie the score just 47 seconds into the final period.

However, Chicago could never quite get over the hump, and Madison got the eventual game-winning tally from Messner at the 3:56 mark. Daniel Willett got the assist on the play, patiently faking a pair of slap shots before finding a shooting lane and firing through traffic. The Madison native got his tape to the high shot and redirected it past Carlson to make it 5-4.

After serving a two-minute minor, Ryan Lohin then added insurance for Madison, stepping out of the box, joining the rush and beating Carlson with a quick blocker-side wrist shot to make it 6-4 at 14:32.

The Capitols would still face a challenge when Lohin got whistled for a four-minute double minor for high-sticking at 14:45, but Madison killed the full duration and sealed the win.

After picking up their first preseason triumph, the Capitols wrap up their preseason on Sunday morning for a 10 a.m. meeting with the Bloomington Thunder at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
