Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, Calif. - Yusmeiro Petit allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, but he settled in and struck out seven over seven innings to help lead the Fresno Grizzlies to a 3-2 win over the Tacoma Rainiers on Friday at Chukchansi Park.

Abraham Almonte hit a roundtripper off the batter's eye to lead off the game and give Tacoma an early 1-0 advantage. Petit retired the next nine Rainiers hitters in a row and set down 21 of the final 24 batters he faced without allowing another run.

Petit has pitched seven innings in each of his last four starts while also striking out 26 and walking one over the same stretch.

Petit was up against one of the Seattle Mariners' top prospects, Taijuan Walker. Tacoma's starting pitcher did not allow a run in his first four innings before Ehire Adrianza hit an RBI double to score Juan Perez from first base in the fifth inning.

Brett Pill hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie game. The homer was Pill's team-leading 16th of the season.

Carter Jurica added an important insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single to score Adrianza.

The Rainiers threatened in the ninth inning. Heath Hembree, pitching for the second straight night, struck out the first batter he faced before surrendering a solo home run to Carlos Peguero that cut the Grizzlies' lead to 3-2. After allowing back-to-back two-out walks, Hembree picked off pinch runner Carlos Triunfel at second base to end the game and pick up his 21st save.

Tacoma also put two runners on in the eighth inning, but Jean Machi induced a crucial double play. After Steve Edlefsen sandwiched a strikeout with two singles, the right-hander was spelled by Machi with runners on first and second base. On a 2-0 count, Ty Kelly grounded to second base where Nick Noonan and Ehire Adrianza turned the inning-ending double play.

The Grizzlies were 3-for-3 with runners in scoring position while the Rainiers were hitless in four runners in scoring position opportunities.

Gary Brown was the lone Grizzlies hitter to tally two hits.

Adrianza and Jurica, batting eighth and ninth, respectively, each had a hit, RBI and walk.

Logan Bawcom took the loss for the Rainiers after allowing two runs over two innings.

The Grizzlies and Rainiers will meet for game three of their four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 pm. Left-hander Mike Kickham will face Tacoma's Blake Beavan.
