MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Leadoff hitter Robbie Grossman went 5-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored to propel the Oklahoma City RedHawks to a 8-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds before a season-high 14,734 fans on Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter, currently on a rehabilitation assignment while recovering from back and shoulder ailments, made his first start for the Redbirds after one rehab outing at Double-A Springfield on Monday.

Carpenter - who took a loss for Memphis - scattered nine hits for four runs in 3 1/3 innings, throwing 74 pitches (49 for strikes). He walked two batters and struck out two.

In the first inning, he worked around a game-opening single for a scoreless frame, throwing 10 pitches (five for strikes). He turned a Jonathan Villar comebacker into a 1-6-3 double play and induced a broken-bat groundout to second base to end the inning.

The 38-year-old tossed 27 pitches (17 strikes) while giving up a pair of two-out runs in the second inning. After retiring the first two RedHawks, Carpenter loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a five-pitch walk. Carlos Perez followed up with a two-run single and was tagged out while attempting to advance to second base.

Carpenter began the third frame by allowing a leadoff triple by Grossman, who later scored on an infield groundout. After working a walk, Villar came home to score the RedHawks next run on a Marwin Gonzalez single. Carpenter fanned Singleton with his 28th pitch of the frame.

Carpenter allowed two of his first three baserunners to reach to begin the third, and was removed from the contest after his 74th pitch of the game. Victor Marte would strand both inherited runners and escape the jam.

A four-hit attack against Jorge Rondon combined with a throwing error pushed the score to 8-0 in the sixth. Rondon gave up four runs (two earned) in his inning of work.

Outfielder Justin Christian, second baseman Kolten Wong, and catcher Travis Tartamella all had two hits in a losing effort. Outfielder Chad Huffman tied a Redbirds franchise record with four walks, matching Bryan Anderson's feat on July 19, 2011.

Memphis scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh, as Wong hit a sacrifice fly to score Curtis.

Marc Rzepczynski tossed one scoreless frame. Sam Freeman worked around two hits while fanning three in two innings to conclude the game.

Oklahoma City starter Jake Buchanan tossed six scoreless inning of five-hit ball to improve to 2-2.

The Redbirds and RedHawks conclude their four-game series at 6:05 pm CT on Sunday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Boone Whiting (4-4, 4.77) will toe the rubber in the series finale against Oklahoma City left-hander Wade LeBlanc (0-1, 8.36).
