Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (June 1, 2009) - Lake County Captains' right hander Alexander Perez surrendered just an unearned run on a pair of hits over six strong inning and struck out 10 Power batters on Monday morning at Appalachian Power Park as the Captains beat the Power 4-3.
Lake County got on the board first in the top of the fourth on Adam Abraham's RBI double. The Power tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Robbie Grossman reached on a bunt base hit and stole second base. Grossman then stole third, and catcher Doug Pickens's throw to third base in an attempt to catch Grossman stealing hit off of third baseman Adam Abraham's glove and went into left field, allowing Grossman to score.
The Captains regained the lead in the top of the fifth as Delvi Cid reached on an infield single to score Chris Nash. Lake County plated a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth to pull away on back-to-back RBI singles from Nash and Pickens.
Quincy Latimore hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to bring the Power within one. Bobby Spain followed with a single to put the tying run on base with nobody out, but Steve Smith retired the next three batters to end the game.
Prez (4-2) was sensational over six strong innings and earned the victory, while Smith (9) allowed two runs on three hits in his only inning of work to snag his second save of the series. Gabriel Alvarado (2-4) was tagged for two runs on five hits over five and a third and suffered the loss.
West Virginia fell to 19-32 after the loss, and the Captains improved to 24-26 with the win. Bobby Spain turned in the only multi-hit game for the Power, going 2-for-4, giving him five hits in series. Jeremy Farrell walked and singled to extend his on base streak to 11 games. Ten out of their last 11 games have been decided by two runs or less. They are 5-6 during that stretch.
West Virginia will finish the four game series with the Lake County Captains at Appalachian Power Park on Monday morning. Right hander Maurice Bankston (1-4, 4.98) will start for the Power and the Captains will counter with left hander T.J. McFarland (2-2, 3.61). The first pitch is scheduled for 11:15 AM.
