State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Delvin Perez smashed the first home run of his professional career and knocked in five runs to help lead the State College Spikes to a 9-1 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Sunday night at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field to stop an eight-game losing streak.
Perez, the 2016 first-round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals, hit a 2-1 pitch from Williamsport (32-43) starter Francisco Morales into the Spikes (35-40) bullpen in left field in the seventh inning for a two-run shot. The Loiza, Puerto Rico native then doubled in another run in the eighth, and finished the evening with a two-run double in the ninth.
Wadye Ynfante got State College going with a solo shot to left-center field off Morales in the second for his fourth homer of the year and scored three runs himself as part of a 3-for-5 night.
Stanley Espinal also joined the Spikes' home run party with a solo homer of his own to start the eighth inning. Espinal, the team's Most Valuable Player for the 2018 season, leads the club with eight home runs and 41 runs batted in this season.
Matt Duce doubled in two runs in State College's four-run eighth as well.
Williamsport scored its lone run in the seventh when Ben Aklinski reached base on a wild third strike, advanced to second on another wild pitch, and scored on a Jesus Henriquez double.
Eli Kraus (3-2) logged six scoreless innings on the mound in the final start of his debut professional season. The Cardinals' 2018 24th-round draft choice out of Kent State yielded four this and a walk while recording six strikeouts during his tenure on the hill.
Morales took the loss for the Crosscutters after being tagged for three runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The right-hander struck out six batters during the evening.
The Spikes and Crosscutters will each complete their 2018 seasons on Monday with a Labor Day matinee matchup at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. The 1:05 p.m. game will feature a bullpen-led effort for State College, with no starter yet named. Williamsport is slated to send left-hander Manuel Silva (2-5) to the hill.
